Our biggest signing of the summer is here!

For the 2025-26 season, the Saudi Pro League has partnered with none other than Nigeria and Al Kholood captain William Troost-Ekong to bring you a behind-the-curtain account of life in the Roshn Saudi League.

And, if the first of his monthly columns is anything to go by, the well-travelled centre-back is just as good on the keyboard as he is on the pitch.

New Season, New Chapter

In January 2025, I started sharing diary-like updates publicly on LinkedIn, providing fans across the world an unfiltered look at matchdays through YouTube vlogs and my writing.

Entering a new phase in my career by joining the Roshn Saudi League, I knew this would provide immense opportunities given the competition’s rapid development and innovation.

My aim was simple: to give curious fans an insight into Saudi football, and eventually the broader sports and entertainment scene in the Kingdom, which is establishing itself globally.

I also wanted to showcase what life is like as a foreign player here, both on and off the pitch, answering my most consistently asked questions about life and sport in the Kingdom.

Things didnt go unnoticed. Fast forward a few months of discussions and planning, and I am now proud to officially be the first player to write for the Saudi Pro League. This opportunity reflects the growth mindset and forward thinking available to players to contribute beyond being on the pitch.

My hope is that the monthly insights will provide readers, both domestically and internationally, offering a player’s lens through the ups and downs of the season, and all the excitement surrounding it.

Settled in Ar Rass

Beginning my second season with Al Kholood, I can genuinely say that I feel at home in Ar Rass. When I first arrived late one night about a year ago, I asked myself whether I had made the right decision. But almost immediately, the warmth, hospitality, and kindness of the people put me at ease.

Saudi hospitality, as many will tell you, is second to none. This is why I was so excited to return for the new season and begin a new chapter with Al Kholood.

Last season, as a newly promoted club with a squad that was assembled shortly before the opening game, and make our RSL debut, we finished in a strong ninth position.

While there were difficult moments, we learnt so much about Saudi football and about each other as teammates.

I believe those lessons will be invaluable to push for a better season ahead, and a big thank you and congratulations must also go to former President Mohammed Al Khalifah and the departed management for a successful maiden campaign in the RSL.

Stepping up as Captain

Helping to lead the defence at Al Kholood is no easy task, given the world-class players we face on a weekly basis. Being entrusted with the captains armband this season is a great honour, following on from RSL legend, and now friend, Marcelo Grohe.

One of my biggest priorities as captain is helping new signings, both foreign and domestic, to settle quickly and feel part of the team.

The biggest challenge can be adjusting to a new environment and creating a sense of togetherness, especially in the midst of change. It is an exciting responsibility, given the chance to help lay the foundation of a new club culture.

Historic Moment for Al Kholood

This season is particularly special for Al Kholood, since the Harburg Group recently became the first foreign club owner in Saudi Arabia. This historic development reflects the ambition of both the club and the league, marking what I believe is an important development in Saudi football.

Pre-season has already brought a wave of careful optimism. We have had the announcement of our new manager, Des Buckingham, one of the first English managers in the league, who has a very clear idea and playing style.

Our first challenge is Al Ettifaq away in Dammam on Thursday, the opening night of the season.

With final preparations under way, I look forward to each month sharing an exclusive insight into life in Asia’s No.1 domestic league, covering not only AKFC (Al Kholood Football Club) but all the exciting news happening among my SPL colleagues.

Welcome to The Captains Column!
