Eastern Derby Key Battles: Where Al Qadsiah vs Al Ettifaq will be won or lost
Before the season had even started, we marked this down as one of the absolute must-watch fixtures across the opening months - and with good reason.
The Eastern Derby is always a special fixture in the Roshn Saudi League, but this one matters that little bit more for Al Qadsiah and Brendan Rodgers, who saw their near-flawless record spoiled last term by an unexpected defeat to their neighbours.
This time, they’ll be out for revenge. To whet the appetite, here are five key areas that will help decide Friday’s fixture.

Brendan Rodgers vs. Arthur Papas
This tactical battle on the sidelines will be one of the most fascinating elements of this encounter, with Rodgers having already proved his credentials, not only last season but throughout his celebrated career.
Arthur Papas, who arrived this summer from Cerezo Osaka in Japan, was a brave choice by Al Ettifaq to replace hugely respected Saudi Arabian Saad Al Shehri, but the early signs from Dammam are that they are moving in the right direction.
Papas comes from the Ange Postecoglou school of attacking football having worked underneath the current Al Nassr manager at Yokohama F.Marinos. And much like Rodgers did last season at Al Qadsiah after replacing Michel, has worked hard to transform his team’s playing style.
On Friday, we’ll see two of the RSL’s most attacking coaches going head-to-head.

Battle of the Ball
Following on from that, and digging a little deeper, this is a battle between two teams who love to have the ball.
Al Ettifaq have won the possession battle in every game they’ve played this season - even against Postecoglou’s champions Al Nassr - averaging 58 percent and 435 passes per game.
Likewise, Al Qadsiah have lost the possession battle only once, against NEOM SC in a match they won 2-0, and run at an average of 57.5% and 507 passes.
Clearly, both cannot have the same control against each other. So, whoever can get on top in this particular battle will take a giant step towards victory – although, of course, it’s not just possession that matters, it’s also what you do with it.

Alvaro Medran vs. Tijjani Reijnders
That’s therefore where the individual confrontations come in, and when talking about players that do something with the ball, there are few better in the RSL at the moment than Medran and Reijnders.
The former is something of a veteran at RSL level now, and it shows in his performances. Already this season with Al Ettifaq, Medran has a goal and two assists, also ranking No.1 in the division for passes in the opposition half (301) and second for chances created (18).
In contrast, Reijnders has only recently arrived in Al Khobar, however, has still made an instant impact for Rodgers’ side: in little more than 300 minutes of football, the former Manchester City midfielder has 14 shots on goal, eight of which were on target, and already has three goals. That includes a brace this week against Al Ahli in a Man of the Match performance.
No player, not even teammate and reigning RSL golden boot Julian Quinones, has taken more shots in the same timeframe. Talk about settling superbly.

Julian Quinones vs. Jack Hendry
Which leads us to discussing the Mexican, who has started this season a little slower than last season, but still looms as one of the most important elements of the Al Qadsiah attack.
While the goals haven’t flowed as freely as they did last year, with only two across the opening six rounds, the 2026 Ballon d’Or nominee is something of a Derby specialist. Quinones has netted four times in four appearances against Al Ettifaq, including a double in that 3-2 defeat last season.
The man tasked with keeping Quinones quiet would, usually, be Scotland international Jack Hendry who, like the Al Qadsiah hotshot, featured at this summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A question mark for this clash, though, surrounds Hendry’s availability given he went off injured in Tuesday's goalless draw with Al Faisaly. Should he not make it, then shackling Quinones could fall to Abdullah Madu.

Hosts' Wing Wizards
In case Reijnders or Quinones don’t get you, then Al Qadsiah’s widemen almost certainly will.
Christopher Bonsu Baah and Mohammed Abu Al Shamat have been in scintillating form this season and were at their devastating best against Al Ahli on Tuesday night.
The former, a feature for Ghana at the World Cup, registered his first assist of the campaign, a somewhat surprising stat given the number of chances he has created thus far (11).
Teammate Abu Al Shamat, meanwhile, got a goal and assist to continue his fast start to the 2026-27 RSL, with three goals and two assists thus far.
Containing them won’t be easy, but Al Ettifaq have kept a clean sheet in three of their past four fixtures, so they will take confidence from their defensive efforts. Imagine they’ll look to Radi Al Otaibi and Madallah Al Olayan to contain the Al Qadsiah threat from the flanks.
