Watkins & Toney face off, title foes, fervent fans: Why Al Hilal vs Al Ahli is MUST-WATCH

It feels too early in the season to be talking about campaign-defining matches, but this week’s clash between Al Ahli and Al Hilal certainly has that feel about it.

After Al Ahli’s surprise defeat last time out against Al Kholood, they can ill-afford any further early slip-ups, while Al Hilal will be hoping the momentum from the transfer window can carry onto the pitch as they look to keep pace with champions Al Nassr at the top of the Roshn Saudi League.

With that in mind, here are five reasons why Tuesday night’s eagerly anticipated encounter at Kingdom Arena will be an absolute must-watch.

Early season consequences

Given the depth of competition across the league, it's the finest of margins that now decide where the trophy goes at the end of the season - as Al Ahli know only too well from their experience last term.

Should they suffer back-to-back losses within the first four weeks, they could already be six points off the pace before the 2026-27 campaign really gets going. While there is ample time to make that up, Al Ahli have recently been victims to slow starts.

A victory, however, draws them level with both Al Hilal and Al Qadsiah and keeps them ticking ahead of another crunch clash with Al Qadsiah next week. Lose to Al Hilal, and the pressure will be amplified heading to Al Khobar.

Watkins vs. Toney

England teammates only last month at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, the arrival of Ollie Watkins at Al Hilal places him and Ivan Toney now squarely on either side of the clubs’ fierce rivalry.

While Toney is more than settled in Jeddah: he was pipped to last season’s RSL golden boot on the very final day and already has four goals in three league appearance this season.

Meanwhile, Watkins is fresh off the plane into Riyadh and will be desperate to underline why Al Hilal pushed so hard to prise him from English Premier League side Aston Villa.

Never has the RSL seen two England international strikers go head-to-head, so history will be made. Who, though, will come out on top?

Watkins may have hogged the recent headlines, but he is far from the only arrival at either club this season, with the likes of Crysencio Summerville at Al Hilal and Eduard Spertsyan at Al Ahli having hit the ground running.

Only three games in, both have one goal and two assists as they’ve settled superbly at their respective new employers, giving both sides a slightly different profile this season.

Also, Al Ahli boast too one of the signings of the summer in Francisco Trincao, whose Matchweek 2 goal showcased why he feels a suitable successor to the celebrated Riyad Mahrez.

In their first major test in new colours, who will stand up and shine brightest? Or, given the depth of talent on show, will another hero emerge?

Pressure in dugout

Replacing a revered manager on the eve of the season with little time to prepare is never an easy task, but that is the situation that confronted Marino Pusic at Al Ahli once he stepped into the boots vacated by Matthias Jaissle.

So the pressure was already on heading into a campaign in which Al Ahli, back-to-back Asian champions no less, were one of the favourites for the title. Another defeat would make it two from the opening four games and surely harden the spotlight on Pusic.

In the opposite dugout, Simone Inzaghi is a man that knows all about high-stakes environments having managed Inter Milan before Al Hilal - and both clubs expect success. 

Such is Al Hilal’s stature, in fact, that any time the 2023-24 champions loses a game it always invites pressure. Fortunately for Inzaghi, he hasn’t tasted defeat through his entire RSL tenure, a run that stands now at 37 matches.

Still, the animated Italian will appreciate the significance of extending that stretch against Al Ahli.
