Keys to the Clasico: What decides Al Hilal vs Al Ittihad top-of-table clash?
With the extended international window behind us, and the afterglow of Saudi Arabia’s historic Arabian Gulf Cup triumph still shining bright, the Roshn Saudi League resumes this weekend amid a wave of excitement across the Kingdom.
And what better way to return than with one of the blue-chip fixtures of the calendar, in the Saudi Clasico between Al Hilal and Al Ittihad?
That the two giants sit first and second in the table only adds to the anticipation.
And, just to whet the appetite even more ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash, here are five major storylines heading into what promises to be a cracker in the capital.
--------
First vs second - early title marker
After the first seven rounds of the 2026-27 RSL, only a point separates these two, with Al Hilal sitting one clear at the top on 18 points.
While neither of these teams are winning the title in October and this one game alone won’t decide the trophy's destination, the outcome could set a course for the remainder of the season, given the boost the winning side - should there be one - receive.
Victory for Al Hilal will allow them to create a bit of separation on the rest of the division, even at this early stage.
In contrast, an away win for Al Ittihad would, not only keep their unbeaten run alive, but make it two defeats in three games for Al Hilal and put the pressure back on Simone Inzaghi’s side.
--------
Shifting balance of power
Looking at the recent history between the two sides doesn’t make for pleasant reading for Al Ittihad, with one win in the past 11 RSL meetings.
Their most recent victory, in fact, was an emphatic 4-1 triumph en route to winning the title in 2024-25 - one of the club’s best performances in recent memory.
Jens Wissing’s side have look revitalised this term, though, and have already defeated other title rivals in the form of Al Qadsiah and Al Nassr to prove their title credentials.
But if you want a shot at the crown, you generally must take down Al Hilal along the way. Therefore victory, coupled with their other successes so far, would be proof that Al Ittihad are back as genuine championship contender this season.

Inzaghi vs Wissing - touchline battle
When you manage Al Hilal, you accept the pressure-cooker environment that comes with it, knowing that you’re only ever one poor result away from questions regarding your tactics.
Should Al Hilal drop this one, and cede top spot, Inzaghi would find himself in the spotlight.
For Wissing, meanwhile, his unbeaten start to the season faces its stiffest test. The 38-year-old German took home the Manager of the Month award for September, after three wins in the league.
The highlight of those was undoubtedly the 2-1 triumph against defending champions Al Nassr in Matchweek 5, clearly illustrating how Wissing has reenergised Al Ittihad after a hugely disappointing title defence.
The Saudi Clasico represents the next level of examination, for both managers. Quite simply, there is nowhere to hide.
--------
All-star attack vs breakout star
After two seasons without the RSL trophy, Al Hilal completely remodelled their attack in the summer with a trio of signings in Crysencio Summerville, Ollie Watkins and Gabriel Martinelli.
It’s as fearsome as the RSL has seen, and even accounting for the fact some didn’t arrive until after the league began, they have eight goals and five assists between them already. Their form has helped fire Al Hilal to 23 goals – the highest in the division and seven more than their closest challengers.
However, Al Ittihad’s frontline also has a new look this season, with George Ilenikhena making the most of a fresh start under a new manager to take the league by storm.
The young striker has four goals and two assists of his own - enough to earn him his debut call-up for Nigeria which, by the way, he grabbed with both hands.
Add in an on-song Steven Bergwijn, and the massively influential Houssem Aouar, and Al Ittihad certainly have to tools to hurt Al Hilal.

Did NEOM SC set blueprint?
After five wins to start the season extended their undefeated streak in the RSL to an incredible 47 matches, Al Hilal were looking almost invincible. Then NEOM Sports Club came to the Kingdom Arena in Matchweek 6 and flipped the script.
Despite dominating possession and the attacking stats, Al Hilal found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline. Did the Tabuk side show other teams how to thwart Al Hilal?
It’s hard to go toe-to-toe with the Riyadh heavyweights and come out on top, especially with the talent they have up front. So NEOM SC took the opposite approach.
They sat back, were defensively compact, and struck on the counter. They frustrated Al Hilal like few others have done.
They are traits Wissing spoke about instilling in Al Ittihad during pre-season, of being patient and then attacking with intent.
Will he deploy the same tactics as Christophe Galtier? And then, can lightning strike twice in the capital?
