Abha may really have found their Captain Marvel with the signing of Belgian international - and self-confessed comic book and superhero lover - Michy Batshuayi.

The larger-than-life striker was this week announced as the newly promoted outfit’s latest signing and is sure to deliver entertainment - both on and off the pitch.

Across stints at Marseille, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and a host of top Turkish clubs, Batshuayi has the experience and expertise to make his mark in the Roshn Saudi League.

So, who are Abha signing and what can we expect from “Batsman” this season?

Personality Plus

One of Batshuayi’s most endearing traits is that he likes to have fun and doesn’t take himself too seriously. Certainly, his passion for comic-book superheroes is no joke; he even teamed up with Marvel as an ambassador ahead of the launch of the Avengers movie in 2018.

"A great fan of comics, he's got all the qualities to join the Avengers team," read a press release from the company. "His arrival in the Marvel universe, of course, will remain a mystery."

While at Dortmund, Batshuayi leant in to his “Batsman” persona, often donning a Batman mask during goal celebrations. It’s that type of fun that fans of Abha, and those across the RSL in general, can look forward to.

And, after more than a year off social media website X, Batshuayi posted upon signing for Abha: “Guess who just found his password lol”

A trusted goalscorer

While Batshuayi has had some lean spells through his career, at other times he's been close to unstoppable. The key, according to the man himself, is trust and belief.

When Batshuayi has felt that from a club, he's delivered. Like in Dortmund, when he struck an impressive nine goals in 14 games, or in Marseille (33 in 78), or at Fenerbahce (44 in 75).

It’s a point Batshuayi’s made multiple times across his career. While in Germany, he said: “Here I feel the trust, which is why I can play with confidence.”

Meanwhile, after signing for Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2024, he offered: “I need to feel secure; I need to feel that the fans and the club love me. If that happens, you will have the best version of Michy Batshuayi.”

You know what you need to do, then, Abha fans.

Clinically cool

Not only can Batshuayi score goals, but he can do so from limited opportunities - something Abha alluded to in their announcement of Batshuayi joining.

“One chance is all he needs…” declared their social media.

It’s a fact that goes back to Chelsea’s title-winning season of 2016-17, when Batshuayi averaged 29 touches for every Premier League goal he scored. It was a record that held all the way until 2022, when a certain Erling Haaland arrived in England.

Still, that stat illustrates how effective Batshuayi can be in front of goal, which will be welcome news for Abha given their new-found RSL status. Most probably this season, they’ll need to capitalise when they can - and “Batsman” is just the man to save the day.

Leading from front

This is one of the most important elements for teams that are newly promoted and thus determined to ensure a prolonged stay in the top flight.

At 32, Batshuayi has the experience and the maturity required to take on that leadership role. It’s something he spoke about at Eintracht Frankfurt, his most recent port of call before Abha.

“I see myself as a leader and will try to motivate the young players and be there when I’m needed,” Batshuayi told the club’s official website.

Having played at the very top of the game, in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and also the FIFA World Cup with Belgium, Abha’s new recruit arrives with an arsenal of knowledge and knowhow ready to share and impart to those around him.

And, in a squad full of players that will, understandably, require some time to get used to the rigours of the RSL - Abha opened their 2026-27 campaign with a home defeat to Al Hazem - Batshuayi’s bounty of experience will prove absolutely invaluable.
